We have been manufacturing paint in Australia for the past 42 years, but never have we experienced as many calls from customers as recently.  They are all asking the same question.  Are Wallmaster and Astec Paints truly Australian Made Products and are we an Australian Owned Company?.

With the advent of 2020 and Covid-19, the last 12 months has been a tumultuous year for us all.  But if there is one thing the year seems to have taught the Australian Public, is that we need to look after our Australian Manufacturing Industry. Australia has had a heavy reliance on key imported goods in recent times. However in 2020, there were shortages of many key goods in Australia as international logistics ground to a halt and international manufacturers favoured their own markets instead of ours.

This topic is dear to my heart as I grew up in the South Australia where the manufacturing industry was once alive and well and is where many of us started our careers straight out of school.  However, sadly I have watched the manufacturing industry decline to almost nothing in our state.

Once we made everything in Australia. From whitegoods at Kelvinator, to cars at Chrysler and Holden, to clothes lines for almost every Australian back yard - the iconic Hills Hoist.  Sadly today, I drive past all these sites and they’re all gone. Some replaced by large warehouses and outlets focused on selling a great proportion of goods that are imported.

Watching the Manufacturing industry decline for me was personally devastating. I had an eerie feeling from the core of my being. It was as if I somehow knew that one day, the loss of locally produced products would ultimately come back to haunt many sectors of the Australian Public. Not only that, but I really loved how the hive of manufacturing activity made me feel, it was like a sense of purpose that we, the community, all shared.  Little did I know at the young age of 15 that during my life would have the opportunity to do something about it.  

I would have to write thousands of pages to get to the point of how I ended up as one of the owners of a family-owned paint manufacturing company in 1978.  But that is what happened and here we are 42 years later with one of Australia's most trusted paint brands that is a 100% Australian Owned and Operated Business.

Most Paint Brands you see on shelf today are now in foreign hands.  Dulux, British Paints, Berger, Porters Paints, Walpamur, Cabot’s, Intergrain and Feat & Watson have all recently been bought by Nippon Holdings of Japan. 

Furthermore, Solver, Wattyl, Taubman’s, Bristol and White Knight Paints are owned and controlled by American interests. Now, all but a few paint makers remain the true Patriots of the Australian Paint Industry and we are one of the few. This is something to think about the next time you paint.
